Hot & Spicy, perfectly cooked Chilli Garlic Prawns in 10 minutes – gimme some! 😀
If you’re anything like me (i.e. human), you sure are bummed out when the weekend rolls to an end and it’s just one sleep before having to head back to work. It is the worst! Wouldn’t it be so much easier if we could just skip the five day work-week and go right to the next weekend? Or maybe have a 3-day weekend and a 4-day work-week? That’s work-life balance right there! Governments (any or all), are you listening? 😛
I’ve found that cooking a really great meal to tie up a fun weekend in a proverbial bow, or doing a bit of meal planning for the week ahead, can be therapeutic. And if you can put together scrumptious meals in a jiffy, nothing like it! That’s where these 10 minute Chilli Garlic Prawns come in!
I mean it guys, 10 minutes. From start to finish. A minute to chop up the garlic and coriander. Three minutes to cook the spices until aromatic. Four to cook the prawns. And two minutes to serve them, any way you like! Piece of cake, right? Let’s get right to it.
Here’s what you need:
- Jumbo Prawns – 500 g, cleaned & deveined, fresh or frozen & defrosted
- Olive Oil – 2 tbsp
- Garlic – 5 large cloves
- Chilli Flakes – 1/2 tsp, more if you want it spicier
- Red Chilli Powder – a pinch
- Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
- Salt – to taste
- Juice of 1/2 small lime
- Fresh Coriander – a small bunch
Here’s how you make these 10 minute Chilli Garlic Prawns:
- Slice the garlic and chop the coriander finely.
- In a large frying pan placed on medium heat, pour two tablespoons of olive oil. When the oil is hot, add in the sliced garlic and fry until fragrant.
- Add the chilli flakes, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and 2 tbsp of water (I used the reserved water from defrosting the prawns for extra flavour) and cook until aromatic and the spices meld together.
- Pop the prawns on to the pan and toss until coated with the spice blend. Season with salt and a drizzle of lime juice. Cook for 4-5 minutes, or until the prawns turn translucent, springy to the touch and the flesh is soft and buttery.
- Garnish with fresh coriander and serve.
Ta Daaaaaaaaaa! That’s really how easy it is to make these Chilli Garlic Prawns. It’s ridiculous! So if you’re making excuses for eating unhealthy food on the regular because you have no time/inclination to cook, please please make this dish. You will love it, I promise!
These prawns are spicy, garlicky and so yum! They are hot (enticingly ‘chatpata’ for all my Hindi speaking friends) in a way that doesn’t set your mouth on fire; but makes you want to go back for more. The flesh of the prawns is pink perfection; sweet, buttery and soft. And the coriander/cilantro garnish (though totally optional) is a wonderful flourish, elevating the dish to a whole other level. I’m still reeling from this incredible dinner last night!
There are so many ways in which you could eat these 10 minute Chilli Garlic Prawns – as an appetizer with a yogurt dipping sauce; with a side of quinoa cooked in broth; tossed into a green salad with a simple lemon-pepper dressing; or with a serving of brown/white rice. My favourite way to eat these is in a Pita wrap with some Labneh or Yogurt Sauce. Soooooooo GOOD!
To say the family LOVED these Chilli Garlic Prawns is an understatement. The boyfriend really enjoyed the wrap. Mom even asked me for my recipe, which is always an honour because she is such a fab cook. And it even got Dad’s seal of approval; he went as far as to say ‘SUPERB’! *insert shocked face emoji* So yeah, these Chilli Garlic Prawns were a hit! 😀
